The South Carolina Social Studies curriculum standards are designed to serve as a benchmark to connect the history of our state and nation to what is taught in the classroom. We at Fort Sumter NM recognize the importance of these standards to learning. All of the education materials were designed with the state’s standards in mind. Did You Know?
The first human death of the Civil War occurred on April 14, 1861, the day after the battle of Fort Sumter ended. Private Daniel Hough died when the cannon he was loading (for the Union's 100-gun salute to the U.S. flag) discharged prematurely. Fort Sumter National Monument, SC
