So you want to learn about the Civil War?

Can you imagine spending almost ten months of the Civil War fighting in one area? Why were the soldiers here for so long? How did they pass their days? What was it like living in the trenches around Petersburg?

Through Soldier Life and Pictionary examine the lives, the uniforms and the equipment  of Civil War soldiers who traveled on foot, fought on horseback, or fired a cannon.

Clairton Coke Works- within Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area- relies on barge transportation for delivery of nearly 17,000 tons of coal a day. Its dock is nearly a mile long. During the winter, the plant keeps a 10-day stockpile of coal in case the rivers freeze.
