U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors and volunteers fortify the foundation of a flood barrier along the quickly rising James River in Jamestown, N.D., April 15. The swollen river continued to rise, fed by snow melt from record winter snow pack.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, is fully engaged in a flood fight in the city of Jamestown, N.D. For the first time since the Jamestown Dam was constructed in 1954, the spillway has experienced minor spillover due to high winds and runoff from rainfall. The Corps is keeping a close eye on the situation, and adjusting water releases at the dam as necessary to prevent uncontrolled releases via the spillway. Fort Peck Dam Spillway, Fort Peck, Mont.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers heralds its beginnings during the founding of our nation.  On June 16, 1775, the Continental Congress established the Army and provided for a Chief Engineer, Col. Richard Gridley, to immediately direct fortifications during the Battle of Bunker Hill.

In 1802, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was made permanent.

On Jan. 2, 1934, Capt. James M. Young became the first commander of the newly- established Omaha District. The immediate mission of the Omaha District was the creation of the Ft. Peck Dam in Montana.
