NAICS Sector: 11 - Forestry, fishing, hunting, & agricultural support services

The Nonemployer sector of forestry, fishing, hunting, and agricultural support services is comprised of establishments primarily engaged in only three activities: 1) harvesting timber, 2) harvesting fish and other animals from their natural habitats, 3) providing support activities for crop, animal, and forestry activities that does not lead to agricultural production. Examples of support activities include such duties as cotton ginning, soil preparation, planting, breeding services for animals, pedigree record services, boarding horses, dairy herd improvement activities, livestock spraying, sheep dipping and shearing, estimating timber, forest firefighting, forest pest control, and consulting on wood attributes and reforestation.

It is important to realize that nonemployer data for this sector EXCLUDES all forms of agricultural production (as they are covered by the census of agriculture conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture). Therefore, any establishments referred to as farms, ranches, dairies, greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, or hatcheries are considered production based and eliminated from the totals of this sector.

Also excluded from the forestry, fishing, hunting, and agricultural support services sector are establishments primarily engaged in agricultural research (as they are classified in Industry 5417 - Scientific Research and Development Services).
