January 28 AmCham Roundtable - Poti FIZ to be Completed by End
of 2009
Dr.
S.K. Chatterji, the general director of Rakia Georgia Free Industrial
Zone (FIZ), told AmCham members that the Poti FIZ project is still
on track despite the global financial crisis and the August war.
According
to him, the $200 million investment will be inaugurated by the
end of year. Chatterji noted that there are certain "challenges"
but the zone has the potential to be one of RAKIA's most successful.
Represenatives
from RAKIA Georgia's other investment interests, including Rakeen
Development Georgia, the real estate development company, were
also present at the meeting. According to Tengiz Bendukidze, the
marketing manager for Rakeen Development Georgia, told AmCham
members the company's six development projects are on also on
track and construction has started. For more information about

The U.S. Ambassador
John Tefft provided the members with his traditional update on
political and economic developments in both the United States
and Georgia. Ambassador Tefft spoke about changes to the administration
in the United States, as well as the new U.S.- Georgia Charter.

Human Resources & Training Steering Committee meeting
Companies
including Synergy Group, Geocell, UGT, Caucasus University, American
Academy in Tbilisi, Marriott, Bank Republic, PwC, Efes, Sheraton
and the US Embassy met to begin preparations for the 2009 HR/
Training committee of AmCham. The group identified several goal
and project ideas for the committee including HR manager development,
special interest workshops, crisis management, etc. The next meeting
of the HR/Training committee is scheduled for January 29. For

12, 2008: Prime Minister Meets AmCham Members
AmCham members
had an exclusive meeting with Prime Minister Grigol Mgaloblishvili
and Finance Minister Nika Gilauri to discuss the governments
position on the global financial crisis and the amendments to
the tax and customs code.
Prime Minister
Mgaloblishvili promised members that the government is doing everything
possible to make sure the business climate stays competitive and
attractive including the reduction of taxes and a special
commission to oversee the allocation of aid money.
