Guide to the
1997 Economic Census

Geographic Detail in Census and Current Programs

The 1997 Economic Census presents statistics for the Nation, States, metropolitan areas, counties, places, and ZIP Codes, but that coverage varies from sector to sector. The greatest variety of statistics and the most detailed classifications usually are published at the national level. There are fewer statistics and less detailed classifications for States, and fewer still for smaller areas, to avoid disclosing information about individual firms and to reduce publishing costs.

By comparison, most current economic surveys provide very little geographic detail. The Annual Survey of Manufactures publishes State data, but only a few of the Current Industrial Reports have State data. The retail trade survey previously published data for the largest States and metropolitan areas, but is now confined to national totals. Among the current programs, only those based on governmental administrative records--County Business Patterns and current construction reports--provide information for counties or places.

The chart below shows the types of geographic areas for which data are available from those economic census and survey programs with subnational geography.

The reference date for the geographic definition of cities and counties in the economic censuses is January 1, 1997. Therefore, if a place or metropolitan area has changed boundaries since those dates, those changes are not reflected in census tabulations. Geographic comparability between 1992 and 1997 is discussed in Working with the Data.
