Amazon's Kindle DX- It's Coming!
This morning in New York, Jeff Bezos announced Amazon's new Kindle DX, which has a 8.5" by 11" screen that rotates to a landscape display, a built-in PDF reader, and more storage space. It's already available for preorder on Amazon. Plenty of tech blogs were liveblogging the press conference, including CrunchGear, Engadget, and Gizmodo. The New York Times, Boston Globe, and San Francisco Chronicle will offer reduced prices for long-term subscriptions, and several universities have also signed on. Probably the best part of the conference was when the display suddenly went backwards and Jeff Bezos said, "I'm going to choose to find this hilarious" (via Engadget)."I like it, but doubt I would want to bring this on a trip or use it in bed to read," writes Gizmodo. "It clearly is a work device, meant for displaying 8.5x11-inch type docs." So will people buy it? "I love to read and I really wanted to love this new device, but for me the price is still prohibitive at $489 and the lack of any sort of color is also a bit of a deal-breaker," writes teasphere.

Fan film The Hunt for Gollum, a 40-minute film based on J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, was released at the Sci-Fi-London film festival this past weekend and is also available to view free on the web. Though the film was made for just £3,000, and is entirely nonprofit to avoid copyright issues, "don't let that small budget fool you," writes NewTeeVee. "Bouchard has crammed his mini-epic with a big cast, stellar set design and blockbuster special effects....If there is an Academy Awards for fan films, The Hunt for Gollum will likely be the front-runner for whatever top prize is handed out." instant fundas calls the film "as professionally made as the original million dollar Hollywood creation that rocked box offices worldwide." "First selling point: the cinematography, which is as epic as the original. And no, these are not blue screens. Someone scouted these locations," writes AppScout. "Second selling point: the production values. Sure, there's a bit of cheesy CGI, but overall the effects are very well done, including the orcs. Third selling point: the actors. The actor who plays Gandalf doesn't quite have the mannerisms of Ian McKellen, but the similarity is nevertheless striking." Fan Cinema Today has tracked down some other LOTR fan films.
