2008 ENERGY STAR Qualified New Homes Market Indices for States

The ENERGY STAR Qualified New Homes Market Indices for States compares the number of ENERGY STAR qualified new homes built to the number of privately owned housing units permitted in each state and the District of Columbia. Each state's index is a measurement of ENERGY STAR's presence in the site-built, single-family new homes market for that state. It does not measure other energy efficiency efforts within the state. The map below illustrates the ENERGY STAR Qualified New Homes Market Indices for States for 2008. ENERGY STAR, in partnership with stakeholders, achieved an average national market presence in the new homes sector of nearly 17% in 2008. States with a market index equal to or greater than the national average are listed in the table below.

Over 100,000 new homes earned the ENERGY STAR in 2008. This is equivalent to:

Eliminating the emissions from 49,000 vehicles
Saving 296,400,000 lbs of coal
Planting 81,000 acres of trees
Saving home owners $45 million on their utility bills

1 In addition to site-built, there are ENERGY STAR qualified multifamily homes as well as ENERGY STAR qualified manufactured homes. However, these homes are not included in the indices because of differences in the definition and tracking of these types of homes by the US EPA and Census. ENERGY STAR qualified new homes data is submitted quarterly to EPA on behalf of builders by third-party rating providers accredited by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET).
