**************************************************************************** Auxiliary files for USA COUNTIES 1992 CD-ROM **************************************************************************** The file USACOAUX.EXE contains auxiliary files (in compressed form) to allow the EXTRACT software to work with the U.S.A. Counties 1992 CD-ROM issued by the Census Bureau. You must also install EXTRACT version 1.4a (issued November 1992) or later. **************************************************************************** ** Installing these files for use with EXTRACT ** 1. Create a subdirectory for the auxiliary files, preferably under the EXTRACT directory, and make this the current directory: C: CD \EXTRACT MD USACOAUX CD USACOAUX 2. Uncompress the auxiliary files onto your hard disk: a:USACOAUX [This command assumes that you have USACOAUX.EXE on a diskette in your a: drive. If you are installing off another drive or subdirectory, substitute the appropriate designation for "a:" above.] USACOAUX.EXE is a "self-extracting" archive containing catalog, data dictionary and other auxiliary files that EXTRACT needs in order to select and display data from the U.S.A. Counties CD-ROM. **************************************************************************** ** Starting EXTRACT to work with USA Counties files ** 1. Make the directory containing EXTRACT.EXE the current directory: CD \EXTRACT 2. Start the program. EXTRACT You will be asked to specify some drives and directories. 3. You must specify a CD-ROM drive letter. This is the letter assigned when the reader was installed; often, the reader is assigned the letter "L". 4. You also will be asked to specify a "work directory." This is any directory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\EXTRACT\WORK), that EXTRACT can use to store temporary files; be sure to create the directory before attempting to use it in EXTRACT! 5. When the system asks for the location of auxiliary files, specify the subdirectory where you installed the auxiliary files for the CD-ROM you are using, e.g., C:\EXTRACT\USACOAUX. 6. Confirm those selections with es or ave. If you ave, the system will ask you to name a command that will let you skip these steps in the future. The name EXUSACO will be suggested, but you may use anything you want. Just use a different one for each type of CD you have. **************************************************************************** ** For More Information ** For general instructions in using EXTRACT, print out the documentation, EXTRACT.DOC, which is created by the program EXTRCT14.EXE, available separately. Some notes on how EXTRACT works with the USA Counties CD-ROM appear near the end of EXTRACT.DOC. Step-by-step tutorials on the use of economic census and 1990 census CD-ROMs are in files EXTUTOR1 to 4. ****************************************************************************
