Fires, Falls, and Fleeting Moments: The Research and Practice of Making the Home Safe
Description of Session:
Each year more than 160,000 people die from injuries and millions more are injured and survive. For some, the injury causes temporary pain and inconvenience; for others, the injury leads to suffering, disability, and chronic pain. A safe home environment is vital in preventing many of these injuries. CDC’s Injury Center is responsible for addressing all phases of injury research—from defining the problem to testing the effectiveness and public acceptance of an intervention—for the major causes of injury among all age groups. The Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention is dedicated to reducing the number and severity of unintentional injuries in the home and the community through science-based, applied research and prevention programs. Advancing public health in the home requires attention to key areas in unintentional injury prevention, including fires, falls among older adults, and drownings. Presenters in this session will provide details about the current science, data systems, and effective program interventions in these critical areas of injury prevention.
