Using Radar to Advance Migratory Bird Management

Radar-captured snapshot of spring bird migration across the eastern and central U.S.

Dr. Janet Ruth, a researcher with USGS Fort Collins Science Center, is coordinating a collaborative effort among scientists and managers who are using Doppler weather radar and other radar technologies to study bird and bat migration. Dr. Ruth and USGS scientists from the National Wetlands Research Center, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, and Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, as well as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists and university partners, have come together in a coalition that aims to work together more closely to foster radar-related research and software development. Through a series of complementary research projects, they will be developing a suite of products for resource managers and improving our understanding of movement patterns and habitat associations in migratory birds and other wildlife. This information will be useful to managers and others for habitat protection and management, and in addressing issues related to the siting of communications towers and wind turbines, which pose hazards to birds and bats in flight.
