Baltimore, MD (January 30, 2009) – Mayor Sheila Dixon will host “It Takes a Village,” her second annual community Black History Month celebration, on February 7, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the War Memorial Building. The event will be emceed by Maria Broom, known for her roles as an actress, reporter and teacher, and Marc Clarke, formerly the host of 92Q’s “Big Fat Morning Show”. The event will close with a keynote speech given by famous actor, comedian, and activist, Bill Cosby and a discussion on the theme, “It Takes a Village,”
Performers include Sankofa Dance Theater, the Golden Rockettes, Waxter High Steppers, John “Kinderman” Taylor, Zebra Kids, various middle and high-school local talent and a Greek step show. Winners of the Mayor’s Black History Month poetry contest for BCPSS students in grades 6-8 will also present their winning poems on stage.
Downstairs in the War Memorial, a “village” of vendors selling food and African wares will be open during the entire event for visitors to browse and enjoy strolling performances and storytelling.
Free event parking is available at the Baltimore Street Garage. Parking will be free up to three hours, and parking beyond three hours will be a flat rate of $2 through midnight. Parking is available on a first come, first served basis. Coupons for free and reduced parking will be distributed at the event at the War Memorial Building.
