Traveling Ergo Expo stops at MSL Building on Wednesday

The traveling "Occupational Health and Ergonomics Expo" will make its latest stop on Wednesday in the auditorium and courtyard of the Materials Science Laboratory Building at Technical Area 3.

Sponsored by the Laboratory's Institutional Ergonomics Committee (IEC), this is the third in a series of six bimonthly expos to be held Labwide this year. The expo is from 9 a.m. to noon and open to all Lab workers.

"The purpose of the expo is to provide education and resources to folks so that they can work smarter not harder," said Ergonomics Program Manager Graciela Perez of Industrial Hygiene and Safety (ESH-5). "The expo will provide workers with ideas and resources so that they can incorporate ergonomics into their work/life style," said Perez.

"All Lab workers are invited to attend but we especially hope to reach those Lab and contract employees who are not on Lab property," she said.

Perez also will have her own special booth at the expo. "I call it, 'Ask a Board Certified Ergonomist,'" she said. "Unfortunately, people may not recognize how simple changes to their work design can result in a much safer and productive work environment . . . This is a great opportunity for me to talk with workers and answer their questions, one-on-one," she said.

The expo will feature booths on biofeedback; individual office ergonomics reviews; pain management and relaxation techniques for work and non-work environments; the employee assistance program; an ergo demo computer workstation; and an occupational medicine information center. Drawings and door prizes are planned.

Expo participants and sponsors include Occupational Medicine and the Wellness Center (ESH-2); ESH-5; and the ESH Division Office.

The next Ergonomics Expo will be at the Lab's community "Safety Days" event June 21 on Central Avenue and 15th Street downtown, across from the Farmers Market.

Research Library, UNM sign joint use agreement

A joint use agreement has been signed by the Laboratory and the University of New Mexico that will improve research productivity at both libraries. The agreement formalizes the libraries' plans to collaboratively increase patrons' access to scientific literature and data bases, increase electronic collaboration and reduce costs for both organizations.

The agreement, signed last month by Rick Luce of the Research Library (STB-RL) and Johann Van Reenen of UNM's Centennial Library on the main campus in Albuquerque, transfers select hard-copy journals from the Research Library to the UNM Library. The transferred materials will remain available electronically to Lab personnel.

The transfer will provide much-needed shelf space for the Research Library while giving UNM Library researchers access to the literature. In addition, the UNM Library will partner with the Research Library in improving the access to online journals available through JSTOR, a goal of the Laboratory's Library Without Walls project.

The joint use agreement is part of an integrated plan to better serve Laboratory researchers, said Luce. In the wake of being named the Federal Library of the Year in 1999 by the Federal Library and Information Center Committee, the Research Library recently received a New Mexico Roadrunner Quality Award from the board of directors of Quality New Mexico.

Editor's Note: In recognition of National Men's Health Week, June 11 through 17, the Daily Newsbulletin is publishing a health tip every day this week. The information will include methods of detecting certain health problems during early stages. Topics to be covered during Men's Health Week include heart disease, stroke, blood pressure, cholesterol, colon cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and alcoholism. National Men's Health Week was created to increase knowledge of men's health issues, especially early detection of illness through education and routine medical visits. Top 10 trim tips

The American Institute for Cancer Research Newsletter published these 10 tips to help reduce the risk of cancer.

1. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; at least five servings per day.
2. Move every day; engage in some sort of physical activity daily.
3. Debunk the "fat-free" myth; even fat-free foods must be eaten in moderation.
4. Give your food the attention it deserves. Savor your meals and cut back on munching.
5. Snack from a plate, not a package. It is easier to overdo it out of a package.
6. Lend your stomach an ear; don't eat for reasons other than hunger and even limit that.
7. Address emotions; eating will not solve problems.
8. Resign from the "clean plate club." Try to keep part of your meal for leftovers.
9. Avoid the "now I've blown it" syndrome. Occasional splurging doesn't mean you have "blown it."
10. Take things one step at a time; gradually work into healthy lifestyle changes.

A ride into the sunset

Oliver Archuleta of Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico poses with the new bike that he won in ARAMARK's monthly drawing. The 21-speed twist shift bicycle has a dual suspension frame, front and rear cantilever brakes, a shock absorbing front fork and a quick release seat-post clamp. ARAMARK Corp., the Philadelphia based contractor that provides food services for the Laboratory, is giving away a monthly prize as part of an effort to increase customer use of its cafeterias. Lab workers can register for the monthy giveaways at either the Otowi, Mesa, or Technical Area 55 cafeterias. No purchase is necessary. For more information, contact Bruce Reed at 7-3591.
