The United States congratulates the people, political parties, government and the Independent Electoral Commission of the Republic of South Africa, on the successful completion of their fourth national election. The vibrancy and durability of South African democracy was evidenced by the participation of 26 political parties and a voter turnout of close to 80% of registered voters. We commend the voters who demonstrated patience and commitment to the democratic process and we acknowledge the professionalism of the staff of the Independent Electoral Commission in carrying out their duties. United States’ observer teams as well as those from regional organizations like the Southern African Development Community agree that the election was transparent and democratic. The United States looks forward to continued productive engagement with the government of South Africa and the South African people.
