A report of the results of the radiological survey of the Grand Canyon High School Athletic Fields (April 15, 2009) confirmed that there are no elevated radiation levels at the fields and that there is no indication that uranium-bearing waste rock is present in the soils underlying the fields.

The National Park Service (NPS) is now accepting public comments on the construction of a new Science and Resource Management Facility within Grand Canyon National Park. The NPS proposes to design and construct a facility for use by the Division of Science and Resource Management (SRM). In addition to providing necessary office and storage space, the SRM building will invite visiting scientists, students, and others to utilize classrooms and laboratories, offer training sessions, and have some exhibits and opportunities for experiential learning. This cutting edge facility will utilize alternative energy sources and water conservation technology.

Grand Canyon National Park implements the South Rim Visitor Transportation Plan Phase I construction to begin at the Canyon View Information Plaza
The National Park Service (NPS) will begin implementing the first phase of the South Rim Visitor Transportation Plan at Grand Canyon National Park this spring. Parking and roadway improvements will occur adjacent to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center (Visitor Center) at Canyon View Information Plaza (CVIP). Phase I of the construction project is expected to begin in April and be completed by the end of November 2009.

The National Park Service (NPS) will offer a pilot shuttle bus program between Grand Canyon National Park and the neighboring town of Tusayan again this year. The service will be available from May 16 through September 13 and will run at 15 minute intervals between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.

National Park Service to begin trail reconstruction project on South Kaibab Trail within Grand Canyon National Park
Starting in May the National Park Service (NPS) will begin the reconstruction of Grand Canyon National Park’s popular South Kaibab Trail. The project will significantly improve the condition of the trail for both hikers and mule users alike. The project is expected to take anywhere from two to four years and will include resurfacing of the trail; stabilization and preventative maintenance to existing retaining walls; replacing retaining walls that have been lost to floods, slides, or erosion; repairing and aligning existing water diversion features; etc.

Presumptive identification made on bodies discovered in Grand Canyon
The two bodies discovered in a residential trailer park within Grand Canyon National Park yesterday have been identified as Laurent “Maverick” Gaudreau, 82, and Shirley Gaudreau, 73, both from Grand Canyon, Ariz. Presumptive identification was made this morning based on circumstantial evidence, and from marks on scars on the bodies.

Finding of No Significant Impact signed for the Bright Angel Trailhead Area Design Plan at Grand Canyon Nat. Park
The Park's primary objectives for the design plan include enhancing the area's wayfinding and site amenities (including signing, shade, seating, and restroom availability), improving paths and connecting trails, eliminating rim edge vehicle parking to provide enhanced pedestrian circulation, and creating a sense of place - an area visitors will immediately recognize as the Bright Angel Trailhead.
