NTIA and Federal Agencies Begin to Implement Spectrum Policy for the 21st Century: January 24, 2005

On Monday, January 24, Assistant Secretary Michael D. Gallagher chaired the first meeting of the Policy and Plans Steering Group (PPSG), an interagency organization composed of high level officials from ten government agencies, including the Departments of State, Defense and Homeland Security, as well as the Federal Communications Commission. By convening the PPSG, NTIA is executing on the President's November 30, 2004 Executive Memorandum that directs the heads of executive agencies to implement the recommendations of the Spectrum Policy Initiative.

The PPSG will meet periodically to provide high level advice on spectrum policy to the Assistant Secretary. The first meeting included a discussion of the PPSG's plans to further carry out directives contained in the President's Executive Memorandum.

The new approach to spectrum policy utilizes innovative management tools to streamline the deployment of new and expanded services and technologies while preserving national security, homeland security, and public safety.
