Stimulating the Economy

As you may know, the President recently launched a new website – Recovery.gov – that allows the public to track how our taxpayer dollars are being spent under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (also known as the stimulus).

Image of www.dhs.gov/recovery web page. Recovery.gov reflects the President’s commitment to bring a new level of transparency and openness to government as we work to strengthen our economy. That is a commitment I share for our Department – and the reason we’ve created www.dhs.gov/recovery.

The stimulus provides more than $3 billion in new homeland security funding. This funding will be used to improve security at our borders, rebuild our Coast Guard fleet, expand technology, strengthen rail and transit security, and enhance emergency preparedness and response. It will also create thousands of new jobs.

Let me give you a concrete example:

On Thursday, the Transportation Security Administration announced that it will be using $1 billion in stimulus funds to deploy checked baggage and checkpoint explosive detection systems at airports across the country.

This technology will enhance our ability to screen passengers and their bags for bombs and IEDs – including liquid explosives – while improving security and convenience. At the same time, it will create more than 3,000 new jobs associated with the construction and deployment of these systems.

This is precisely the purpose of the stimulus – to protect the country, stimulate the economy, and keep people working.

More projects are in the pipeline and will be coming soon. I invite you to keep track of our progress at www.dhs.gov/recovery.

Janet Napolitano

  • Your JOB is to "Protect" the United States of America.

I find it highly suspicious that you are being drafted to peddle this "recovery.org" web site, as if "pushing" this whole Stimulus-Pork Package is the job function of the "HOMELAND SECURITY DEPT."

I would like to see YOU start actively enforcing the laws against illegal immigration; enforcing the E-Verify Rule that you have delayed would be a good start! At least THAT would put more American CITIZENS back to work……….that would be much better stimulus!

  • Stimulus? Recovery?
Start by enforcing e-verfiy so Amercian citizens can have all the "jobs" that are currently being taken by illegal aliens.

7 million illegal aliens have jobs that belong to CITIZENS!
12 Million CITIZENS are out of work!

  • Could not agree more, they cannot even bother to check illegal hiring employers or the illegal workers. The agents are to lazy or do not care. Go by Santa Clara that business owner who has a lot of illegals thinks the department of homeland security is a JOKE!

    Stimulus? Recovery?
Start by enforcing e-verfiy so Amercian citizens can have all the "jobs" that are currently being taken by illegal aliens.

7 million illegal aliens have jobs that belong to CITIZENS!
12 Million CITIZENS are out of work!

  • Hello...I am going to try to "keep my cool" in this response. I have phoned, faxed and e-mailed til I am blue in the face. I rally, protest and demonstrate any chance I get. I have sat for hours, day and night at my country's border, observing and reporting to a grateful USBP. The Bush administration's lack of interest in the actions and reactions of WE, THE PEOPLE to the onslaught of millions of illegal aliens overstaying various visas, unlawfully entering and occupying our country was AWFUL, to put it mildly.
However, all indications tell us that President Obama, for whom I voted (HOPE & CHANGE), is actually, somehow going to be WORSE! I won't rant about the appointment of Secretary Napolitano and so many other pro-open borders advocates, though I HAVE, on many occasions...I will simply echo the heartfelt sentiments and concerns of my fellow citizens. Since little to nothing has been done to protect our SOVEREIGN NATION from foreign invasion, the matter of tens of millions of unlawful invaders remains as a major contributor to the insecurity of the country. No surprises there, right? Now, we apparently will be expected to share hard-earned benefits belonging exclusively to WE, THE PEOPLE, with millions of unknown, unvetted foreign intruders.
How long does BIG GOVERNMENT expect the citizens it so misrepresents to tolerate this madness?

  • After having checked out recovery.gov a couple weeks ago, I couldn't help but feel that most Americans would find this website to be a great idea. Americans can share their stories, what they think should be done with stimulus money, and even track where stimulus money is being used. However, I also have a feeling that this website will become only website full of successful stimulus projects and stories, rather than including the inevitable mistakes and failures that will come along with this economic recovery. Recovery.gov is an obvious outlet to raise spirits of Americans who want to know how economy recovery will be achieved.

Therefore, I can't help but wonder if this DHS recovery website will be of the same nature. The transparency that this website can provide is following in step with the current administration's plan to let the American people in to the inner workings of the executive agency. I hope that the DHS recovery website will do more than just show the successes that come from the stimulus money DHS received, but be honest with the American people that not every project or endeavor will be a success. However, this honesty can show the American people that even though you may not always achieve the outcome you hoped, you are trying your best to use stimulus money in a way that will get the economy back on track.

  • To all the commenters who keep insisting that DHS must "start enforcing EVerify". You're idiots.

The Secretary of DHS has no authority to "enforce" E-Verify. E-Verify is a VOLUNTARY program that employers may choose to enroll in. DHS has no authority to enforce E-Verify, or to order any employer to enroll in E-Verify. While some States have passed local laws requiring employers to participate in E-Verify (notably Arizona), these laws are not enforced by any Federal agency - its up to the local jurisdiction to determine how and when to measure compliance with E-Verify enrollment.

Congress may pass a law requiring certain employers - or all employers - to participate in E-Verify, but the Secretary has no authority to order any employer to participate.

Pick another pro-enforcement catch phrase - this one is meaningless, and makes you look like the tools (or fools) you really are.

The worksite enforcement "raids" work...it is un-American NOT to enforce the laws that are designed to save American JOBS, and protect the people of America!

Start enforcing the e-verify "RULE" you have delayed on a federal level. We will never accept any "Amnesty" so you better get to it! Your responsible for giving our jobs away to illegal aliens. There is no doubt about that.

"To the "uniformed poster" above who has NO CLUE?"
The federal government has "delayed" a LAW/MANDATE until late May '09 that mandates that ALL government contractors use e-verify. Wake up dummy!

WHY would a government NOT want legal workers on government jobs? HUH!? Yet, that is exactly what they are doing.

  • Secretary Napolitano, any "open border" attitude from you will not be tolerated by the majority of the American people.

We expect you to perform your job as head of DHS and continue with interior worksite enforcement raids that create immediate job openings for citizens that should be working in those jobs to begin with!

Our economy cannot and should not tolerate illegal aliens taking any of our jobs. We cannot afford that; those jobs belong to citizens.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At March 18, 2009 12:02 PM

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano herself chose to delay an official Mandate-Rule to enact E-VERIFY that was supposed to have already begun in February ’09 for government Contractors and sub-contractors.

That stopped citizens from obtaining millions of possible available jobs that are currently taken by illegal aliens. (Construction jobs; technical jobs, manufacturing jobs, all kinds of jobs!)

If this country wants Recovery; E-Verify needs to be enacted immeaditly and all types of enforcement, both interior and border, needs to get much more aggressive. That’s the job of DHS, but they seem to be dragging their feet……meanwhile millions of American’s could have been in a job by now.

  • Part of the recovery/stimulus plan is supposed to increase transit subsidy benefits for Federal employees & participating private sector employers. See the Washington Post story at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/25/AR2009022503303.html. I am wondering if there is any hope that DC area DHS employees will see this increase in the forseeable future. The SmartBenefits/transit coordinator at my agency seems to have no clue.

  • I would just like to know what part of "Illegal allien" don't you understand. Murder is "Illegal" and we punish it. Theft is "Illegal" and we punish it. Not paying taxes is "Illegal" and we...well, lets skip that one. In any event, "Illegal" alliens are just that, "Illegal" yet you do nothing to punish the illegal actions of being here illegally. I guess that is what is to be expected from our government now, illegal means if the violater votes Democrat, its okay. If the violator is a Republican Senator from Alaska...
