"Stimulus" Fails to Deliver the Relief the President Promised

MARCH 18, 2009

THAT WAS THEN: On February 12, President Obama visited employees at an Illinois Caterpillar plant and said, "when they [Congress] finally pass our plan, I believe it will be a major step forward on our path to economic recovery... the head of Caterpillar, said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off. And that's a story I'm confident will be repeated at companies across the country..."

THIS IS NOW: Unfortunately, the Washington Times now reports that Caterpillar has had to cut another 2,400 jobs - with 1,700 of the jobs cut at the plant President Obama recently visited - despite the stimulus.

As the President noted last February, "you can measure America's bottom line by looking at Caterpillar's bottom line:"
