Photographs representing nearly a century's worth of creative output from the renowned Scurlock studio form a new exhibition celebrating the legacy of a family of photographers and presenting a vivid portrait of black Washington, D.C., in all its guises - its challenges and its victories, its dignity and its determination.

With more than 100 images by one of the premier African American studios in the country, The Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise is a collaboration between NMAAHC and the National Museum of American History. Open through Nov. 15, 2009

This hat once belonged to a Pullman Company sleeping-car porter – an African American man working for a company that was once the largest employer of African American men in the country. The hat was donated to the museum during our Save Our African American Treasures program at the Chicago Public Library. The program has been held in Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, DC. Charleston, SC and other cities are coming soon.

News and Updates

The Smithsonian announces that Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup is the architectural team chosen to design the National Museum of African American History and Culture to be located on the National Mall near the Washington Monument. The selection was made by a jury chaired by Museum Director Lonnie G. Bunch III. Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup was among six firms that entered a design competition in January. They will now be asked to respond to an official Request for Proposal to design the new building, scheduled to open on the National Mall in 2015.
