NASA/NIH Workshop: Overview of a Meeting Held December 11, 2003, on the NIH Campus

December 16, 2003
NASA’s Office of Biological and Physical Research and the NIH Office of Extramural Research organized an information exchange meeting between the two Agencies. The meeting was held Thursday afternoon, December 11, 2003, in Building 31C, Conference Room 6. The purpose of the meeting was to update representatives of each Agency about current research planning and funding in order to identify opportunities for collaborative efforts. Agency representatives in attendance are listed at the bottom of the attached agenda.

The workshop began with presentations by NASA staff on the organization and enterprise strategy of NASA’s Office of Biological and Physical Research. These presentations were followed by brief presentations by NIH staff, both intramural and extramural, on past and current collaborative studies with NASA. Discussion then ensued concerning potential areas for future collaboration between the two Agencies.

In addition to the Agenda (MS Word - 21 KB) and roster of attendees (MS Word - 20 KB) is a PowerPoint presentation (PowerPoint - 3.1 MB) that combines the main parts of NASA’s presentations. Four “Organizing Questions” are detailed in this PowerPoint presentation, each followed by specific questions that NASA wants to address, along with potential areas for scientific collaboration under each Organizing Question.

Interested NIH staff are encouraged to review this material. Anyone interested in pursuing discussions about potential collaborations, either within the intramural or extramural programs, may contact David Liskowsky of NASA (202-358-1963) for advice on appropriate NASA staff contacts.

Human Subjects Research Enhancement Awards (HSREA) Web Site Established

January 9, 2003
This past year, the NIH established a Human Subjects Research Enhancements Program to provide short-term support for institutional activities that will strengthen oversight of human subjects research. The program consists of 142 awards to those institutions that receive significant NIH support for clinical research. Activities supported by these awards include development of educational initiatives, creation of tracking systems, infrastructure/technology development, and overall enhancement of IRB operations. A new HSREA Web site has been established that provides information on the activities of these awardees, and incorporates a discussion/chat board for grantees to discuss their ongoing efforts with one another. A link to new HSREA Web site is also posted on the Grants Policy and Guidance page.
