Hemispheric Security

Cooperative Security in the Americas. United States Department of State. Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. www.state.gov/p/wha/hs

In the Western Hemisphere, terrorism; illicit trafficking in arms, persons, narcotics, and precursor chemicals; attacks on critical infrastructure; and transnational criminal enterprises threaten democracy and prosperity. These emerging transnational threats have changed the traditional definitions of security and require coordinated, cooperative, and often multilateral responses by the governments of the hemisphere. Such crosscutting threats require multi-faceted responses by different national organizations, all acting in accordance with democratic norms and principles. The U.S. Department of State has an active program to address the threats, concerns, and challenges to the security of the hemisphere at the bilateral, sub-regional, and regional levels.
