This is a special Expressions of African–Americans: a Cultural Diary bundle featuring the Civil Rights Pioneers Cultural Diary Page including a full Souvenir Sheet of all 6 42–cent Civil Rights Pioneers commemorative stamps, plus the Cultural Diary itself, all for a savings of 10% off the regular retail prices.

Browse The Postal Store’s Black History Stamps and Collectibles The Cultural Diary is a unique collectible consisting of a beautifully illustrated binder designed to hold current and future insert cards of African American stamp issues as well as personal notes. The Cultural Diary includes insert cards, stamps and mounts for four African American issues from 2004 (Paul Robeson, Wilma Rudolph, James Baldwin, Kwanzaa).

The 9 1/4 x 11 3/8 inch binder features a montage of African American historical photographs combined with rich textures and decorative elements rendered in warm earth tones of reds, golds and browns. The interior, 8 1/2 x 11 wire-bound pages are a deep brown, and are designed to allow insertion of stamp issuance cards and notepad pages.

Insert cards measure 7 3/8 x 10 inches and contain photographs of the featured stamp subject, biographical information, timeline, and memorable quotations. Cards echo the color palette of the binder. There is also a reproduction of a stamp on each card to designate space for placement of the actual stamp. Insert cards will be produced for all upcoming African American issues, and will include a separate stamp and mount.

The companion notepad is sized to match the insert cards so that the user can record personal thoughts and combine these personal pages in the binder with the stamp issuance cards. (The pages can be rearranged as desired.) In this manner, each consumer can create a uniquely individual album.

This lovely and unusual product is an ideal vehicle to preserve thoughts from and about notable African Americans, to generate interest in collecting stamps, and to create a family treasure.

Civil Rights Pioneers commemorative stamp information

On February 21, 2009, in New York, New York, the Postal Service™ issued a 42–cent, Civil Rights Pioneers commemorative stamp in six designs, designed by Greg Berger of Bethesda, Maryland.

With these stamps, the U.S. Postal Service® honors 12 leaders of the struggle for African–American civil rights. These visionary men and women energized a movement that spanned generations. Art director Ethel Kessler and stamp designer Greg Berger, both of Bethesda, Maryland, chose to approach this project through photographic montage. Pairing two pioneers on each stamp was a way of intensifying the montage effect.

The complete list of 12 Civil Rights Pioneers is:
  • Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954)
  • Mary White Ovington (1865-1951)
  • J.R. Clifford (1848-1933)
  • Joel Elias Spingarn (1875-1939)
  • Oswald Garrison Villard (1872-1949)
  • Daisy Gatson Bates (1914-1999)
  • Charles Hamilton Houston (1895-1950)
  • Walter White (1893-1955)
  • Medgar Evers (1925-1963)
  • Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977)
  • Ella Baker (1903-1986)
  • Ruby Hurley (1909-1980)
