Deal Debates the Fair Tax on the House Floor

Congressman King recently hosted a Special Order to discuss the Fair Tax on the floor of the House of Representatives. I joined a number of my colleagues to speak in support of abolishing the IRS and instituting the Fair Tax. As you know, our economy is in a precarious state. I know that many of you as well as your families have felt this downturn firsthand. Unfortunately, Georgia’s unemployment recently reached 8.6%. I share your concerns about our nation’s future and I am working hard with other members of Congress to find solutions for our economic decline. Transparency in Government: Fiscal Year 2010 Appropriations Requests

The appropriations process is one of Congress' most contentious duties each year, allocating taxpayer funding to agencies, departments, and programs of the entire federal government. With limited financial resources for an ever-increasing basis for demand, we must establish our priorities clearly and make every effort to maximize return on dollars spent without raising the tax burden on hardworking American families.

Visiting the Capitol

Recently the new Capitol Visitors Center opened on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. This new facility is intended to enhance the experience of all visitors to the Capitol by providing a more educational and convenient procedure for visitors. With the new facility in place some of the tour procedures for my office will be changing as well. As before, my office will continue to provide staff-led tours for any constituent who contacts my office for a tour during normal business hours. DTV Transition Date Delayed

On February 11, 2009, President Obama signed into law S.352 the “DTV Delay Act” which delays the Digital Transition date from February 17 to June 12, 2009. The bill also allows the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) to issue replacement coupons to those who allowed theirs to expire with out being redeemed.

Mr. Chairman, our nation has always prided itself on having the safest food supply in the world. This confidence is founded on the hard work of those who grow, process, package and deliver our food, coupled with the oversight and inspections provided by federal agencies such as FDA and USDA working with comparable state regulatory authorities.

Let no one misunderstand, we are all outraged by the alleged violations of law and common standards of safety which are the focus of this hearing and our sympathy goes out to those who have been injured and suffered losses. Although I am a resident of Georgia where the production of peanuts is a virtual part of our state’s economy, there will be no statements of provincial protectionism from me, for it is those who are closest to the problem that are most infuriated by it, for we know that the vast majority of those who produce peanuts and the resulting products are decent, law abiding people.
