The Panama Canal Authority (ACP)

For more than 90 years, the Panama Canal has provided an extraordinarily valuable service to world trade. Since 1999, the Panama Canal has been run by Panamanians, and these 9,000 ACP employees are extremely proud of their record of providing safe, reliable and efficient service to global commerce.

In today’s economy, trade flow has become increasingly important. The Panama Canal currently serves more than 144 different transportation routes from nearly every corner of the globe, connecting the world’s major trade arteries.

Today, the Panama Canal Authority is pushing boundaries – changing and growing for Panama, Latin America and the world: In October 2006, in a popular referendum, the people of Panama voted by more than 75 percent to expand the Panama Canal.

As the waterway nears capacity, an expanded Canal will improve the flow of international commerce. Put simply, expansion will build a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, which will double capacity and allow more traffic and longer and wider ships.

Since breaking ground September 3, 2007, the Panama Canal Expansion Program is on track and on budget. Over the past eight years, the ACP has been a major contributor to Panama, providing directly more than $3 billion to the country’s National Treasury.

As Panama becomes the transportation and logistics hub of the Americas, the Panama Canal will be right there – at the center – supporting a growing market with an expanded waterway (expected by 2014).
