The Operational Oceanography Group of the National Oceanographic Data
Center now uses RSS feeds to help you easily stay informed by retrieving the latest
content you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site
individually.
What is RSS?
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and "Rich Site Summary".
RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital
contents on the Internet. RSS makes it possible for you to keep up with your favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
How Do I Read RSS Feeds?
RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". Some browsers, such as the current versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer have built in RSS readers . You can identify by a small button that says either RSS or XML. However, if you click one of these links, you will most likely get a page full of code in your browser. To properly read the feed, you need an RSS reader.
What is an RSS Reader?
An RSS reader is client software that retrieves and displays syndicated web content (feed). It allows you to scan digital information from a number of sources in a central location for easy viewing. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon, , in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds. If you're using a browser that doesn't currently support RSS, there are a variety of RSS readers available* on the web; some are free to download and others are available for purchase.
