Enhanced Vessel Traffic Management System

The Enhanced Vessel Traffic Management System (EVTMS) is a key element in the effort to transform the Canal organization into a world leader in services to the maritime industry, particularly with regard to marine traffic scheduling and tracking. The computerized system integrates state-of-the-art vessel tracking with a maritime operations information database, thus providing a true picture of Canal resources and transiting vessels at any given time.

The EVTMS provides up-to-date and accurate information in real time, as all entries are channeled into a sole central database. The advantage lies in the ability to provide all users with immediate information. The system consists of several modules, all tightly integrated into a central data repository, and uses Global Positioning System (GPS) information, which allows users to pinpoint every transiting ship and all Canal resources via satellite at any given time.

With the implementation of the EVTMS, the Panama Canal has become a forerunner in presenting new and advanced canal technology to the world. By automating the flow of information, the Canal organization ensures that all system operators have the tools and information they need in order to make the best possible decisions based on the most accurate information.

The EVTMS continous improvements, including the new portal for subscribers, changes due to canal improvements and modernization, internal and external policy changes dictated by the International Maritime Organization, show the Canal Authority commitment to providing expedituous, safe, reliable and competitive service by allowing for more efficient Canal resources administration and increased response capabilities in the event of sudden condition changes.
