Eligibility: Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren of Members

Date for applying: Applications due to AFSA by May 1st of each year

AFSA-IRS now offers an annual college scholarship for children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of its members. Each applicant can apply every year that they are eligible, whether they were awarded a scholarship in the past or not. The $2,000 annual scholarship is available to those college students who are pursuing at least a 4-year degree. Applicants must submit the application form together with a personal letter outlining the career you plan to pursue after graduation and why you believe you should be awarded the AFSA Scholarship. Letters of reference and recommendation must also be provided with the application. The AFSA Scholarship Committee will review the applications and recommend the select of the annual scholarship winner.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE: To establish a program to provide funds for a scholarship to qualified children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of current members of the Association.

QUALIFIED APPLICANTS: The applicant must:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States and the son, daughter, grandchild or great grandchild of an active AFSA member;
  2. Be a full-time student at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university;
  3. Be a candidate for a major leading toeither an associates degree, a four-year undergraduate degree, or advanced degree and have a 3.0 overall grade point average;
  4. Have completed at least one full academic year of college work at an accredited college or university; and,
  5. Submit the completed application (MS Word 6/RTF Format), together with.
    1. Current college transcript
    2. Two letters of recommendation from instructors or professors familiar with the applicant
    3. Two letters of personal reference (no former teachers) from persons who can attest to your character
    4. Personal letter outlining why they chose their field of study and the career they hope to pursue after graduation
  6. Some of the criteria upon which the applicant is evaluated are:
    1. Work record – after/during school – both high school and college
    2. Quality of Application & reference letters
    3. Extra Curricular activities – Boy/Girl Scouts, Civic Assoc., Campus Org., Volunteer work – both high school & college

AMOUNT OF BENEFIT: The amount of $2,000 will be paid directly to the institution on the recipient’s behalf. The award is to be used only for books, supplies, tuition, etc.

APPLICATION: Applications are available through the Office of the Executive Director, AFSA-IRS, P.O. Box 4556, Ocean City, MD 21843-4556 and must be received by the AFSA-IRS, Executive Director by May 1 of the year the scholarship is to be awarded. The award recipient will be notified and the award will be mailed directly to the institution on the recipient’s behalf.
