Statement by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Spokesman Sean Smith on Secretary Napolitano's Travel to the Midwest

Release Date: February 4, 2009

As part of a swing next week through Midwestern states that are preparing for flood and tornado seasons, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will stop off in Kentucky to assess the ongoing emergency response and recovery efforts there.  Since the first ice storm hit last week, Secretary Napolitano has been in constant contact with Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and she looks forward to a face-to-face meeting with him next week.

Since the onset of the storms, more than 140 truckloads of water and more than 65 truckloads of meals have arrived in Kentucky, Arkansas and Missouri, as well as thousands of blankets and cots, roughly 80,000 gallons of fuel and approximately 450 generators. We will continue to mobilize supplies to respond to our state partners’ needs.

More details on the Secretary’s upcoming travel will be available in the coming days.
