December 2006

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

December Coin of the Month—It's December and Peter has selected the very first coin struck for everyday use in the British colonies of America.  The New England shilling was a welcomed change from paying for goods by trading or "bartering".  "New England Coinage", our featured "Coin of the Month", offers some great coin activities and coin connections about the British colonies of America.

Wright Brothers' Flight—December 17th marks the 103rd anniversary of the first flight that took place near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina over a hundred years ago.  The first flight lasted only 12 seconds and the Wright Flyer traveled only 120 feet, but it was the beginning of man in a flying machine!  Take a look at these 2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Coins that honor this remarkable day, and the North Carolina Quarter that features the Wright brothers and Flyer in the sky over Kill Devil Hills beach.  Then go to the Games page and play "When Pigs Fly!"

Coloring Pages—Connect with all of the great coins released in 2006!  The United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site is sprinkled with coin and character images for you to color; this page was created to let you find them all in one handy place.  All you need is a printer and paints, crayons, markers, or colored pencils!
