Inputs: Partners
Partnerships are integral to the NIOSH Program for the Services sector. Input from customers and stakeholder groups, who have inherent knowledge and concern about the safety and health of workers in the sector, helps in setting research priorities. Collaborative research with our partners may include in-kind contributions, which help to leverage NIOSH research dollars. Partners also add expertise or specialized experience to the research team, which benefits the research, analysis, interpretation, and communication of the results.

The following are examples of productive partnerships with NIOSH on research projects that affect Service Sector workers:
- International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). NIOSH has partnered with these organizations in the Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program since 1998. This congressionally mandated program that investigates line-of-duty fire fighter deaths makes recommendations for preventing occupational deaths and serious injuries among the nation's 1.1 million fire fighters.
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Their primary focus is emergency responder protective clothing and equipment (PPE), including PPE for response to all emergency incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) hazards, as well as the development of standards for emergency responder organizations and personnel concerning the safety, deployment, operations, and protection of emergency responders.
- Interagency Board for Equipment Standardization and Interoperability (IAB). NIOSH provides financial support for IAB and has representation on the IAB Federal Advisory Coordination Committee, Personal Protective and Operational Equipment Subgroup, and Training Subgroup.
- American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International). The goal of this partnership is the development and adoption of PPE performance criteria, test methods, and standards with the ASTM F23 Protective Clothing and Equipment Committee and E54 Homeland Security Committee.
- International Association of Chief of Police (IACP). NIOSH is represented on the IACP Homeland Security Committee, which addresses preparedness issues.
- SUNY-Buffalo. Research staff have collaborated on law enforcement stress research, particularly in the design, implementation, and analysis of police related stress and health studies.
- National Institute of Justice is the research, development, and evaluation arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. They collaborate with NIOSH on projects that examine the effects of stress among law enforcement personnel and family well-being.
- U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS provides access to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) research file. The file includes demographic characteristics of the decedent and information about how the fatal incident occurred and narrative descriptions of the injury circumstances. NIOSH uses the data within its research programs.
- U.S. Department of Defense. Dugway Proving Grounds senior scientific staff have provided laboratory space and completed multiple sample analyses within the project for development and testing of environmental sampling procedures for anthrax spores.
- Highmark Blue Shield of Pennsylvania is a partner on the project to develop a new source of occupational health surveillance data based on medical claim information. Statistical reports from the project data will be tailored for public and private employers in a number of higher risk industries and effective intervention strategies may be developed with input from employers, unions, and professional and trade associations.
- Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) and National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) collaborate on the study of the contribution of both home and work environmental factors to the onset and reactivation of asthma.
- Risk Management and Decision Processes Center (The Risk Center), Wharton School , University of Pennsylvania. NIOSH and The Risk Center at the University of Pennsylvania have a partnership to improve the management, analysis and control of safety and health conditions at workplaces throughout the United States. This partnership uses collaborative efforts and expertise to advance the protection of workers, promote best practices, and encourage employers to develop and utilize safety and health management programs and effective prevention strategies and technologies.
