COAL MINE FATALITY - On Thursday, August 16, 2007, at approximately 6:39 pm a coal bump/bounce occurred while rescue crews were attempting to reach six miners trapped on the Main West pillar section. Rescue/recovery efforts had started approximately 2000 feet outby the section and had advanced about 870 feet in the #1 entry (see sketch). The accident occurred while rescue crews were installing roof supports in an area where coal debris had been removed. Three rescuers were fatally injured in the accident.

These are the 15th through 17th fatalities reported during calendar year 2007 in the coal mining industry. As of August 16, 2006, there were 38 fatalities reported in coal mining. These are the third through fifth fatalities classified as Fall of Face, Rib, Side, or Highwall in 2007. As of August 16, 2006, there were three fatalities in this classification.
