Funding

What does the Bureau fund?

To provide humanitarian assistance worldwide, the Bureau funds international organizations and, to a lesser extent, non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Roughly 90% of the Bureau's contributions go to international organizations such as The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and The International Organization for Migration (IOM).

To fill gaps in programming, the Bureau also supports NGOs that provide relief services overseas. Many of these groups have expertise in a specific region and/or a particular service. Among the NGOs we have recently funded are the International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, and International Medical Corps.

Are the NGOs that receive money from the Bureau obligated to follow any guidelines?

Yes. The NGOs' projects must align with the Bureau's mission to provide protection, life-sustaining relief, and durable solutions for refugees and conflict victims, working through the multilateral humanitarian system to achieve the best results for refugees and conflict victims on behalf of the American taxpayer.
