Democratic Republic of the Congo: displaced short of food and water
Intense fighting in North Kivu has triggered a new wave of displacement of the population. The infrastructure of the camps hosting the displaced is inadequate. Food and drinking water are lacking and hygiene conditions are terrible. The ICRC and the Red Cross Society of DRC are responding to the most urgent needs.

Georgia/Russian Federation: a difficult winter ahead
The effects on civilians of the short-lived war between Georgia and Russia still linger. Thousands face a difficult winter, cut off from services, struggling to obtain food and lacking adequate shelter. ICRC reaffirms strong support for Convention on Cluster Munitions
Addressing a meeting of government experts of States party to the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the use of Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) the ICRC's Director for International law, Philip Spoerri, said any new proposals should complement rather than contradict the recently approved Convention on Cluster Munitions.  3-11-2008

After decades of war and neglect, Iraq's health care, water and sanitation services are in a dire state, failing to meet the basic needs of a large part of the population. Despite an improvement in security in some areas, basic services in many places are inadequate.  29-10-2008
