The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) has established the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park on 100 acres of woodlands, wetlands, lake and meadow adjacent to the Museum. The 100-acre park site is bordered by the White River and runs contiguous to the IMA’s current 52-acre campus, more than half of which consists of historic landscapes and gardens. The park will feature site-specific artworks in a range of media that explore and respond to varied environments. The park is partially situated in the flood plain of White River and is occasionally subjected to flooding. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in Cooperation with the IMA, has undertaken a project with the objective of providing flood information to the IMA in formats that will be beneficial for IMA operations and also that will be educational and interesting to IMA visitors. The project products will be designed to highlight the interaction of floods and the landscape of the Art and Nature Park. The products will include: 1) Web-based real-time and forecast flood inundation maps for the Art and Nature Park; 2) Three-dimensional, high-resolution graphics of the White River channel, adjacent flood plain, and lake that display water depth and velocity information; and 3) a three-dimensional animated flood visualization display that shows the impact of historic floods. To collect data for these products, the USGS is using state-of-the-art technologies including Doppler sonar equipment and a streamgaging station on White River that transmits river water levels to USGS computers in near-real time.
