Finding a Physician Who Specializes in Epilepsy Treatment

The Epilepsy Foundation defines the goal of successful treatment as no seizures and little to no side effects from medication or treatment. Many people achieve these goals with their first medication, but for some it may be more challenging to successfully treat their epilepsy. Studies suggest that after an individual has not achieved successful treatment with two medications, their epilepsy is difficult to control.

While many physicians provide medical care for epilepsy, including primary care physicians and general neurologists, people with difficult to control seizures may benefit by working with a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy treatment. These doctors are called epileptologists.

Most epileptologists are members of the American Epilepsy Society, the organization for professionals who specialize in epilepsy care and research. To help you find a list of epileptologists, we have partnered with the American Epilepsy Society to provide a searchable database.
