A 22-year veteran of the Foreign Service, Krishna “Kris” R. Urs assumed the duties of Charge d’Affaires, a.i. on September 15, 2008, where he had been serving as Deputy Chief of Mission since July 1, 2006. Prior to that, he served as Director of the Office of Economic Policy and Summit Coordination in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Department of State. Mr. Urs served at the United States Embassy in Santo Domingo as the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission from October 2002 to July 2003 and as Counselor for Economic and Political Affairs from August 2000 to September 2002. He served as Economic Counselor at the American Embassy in Lima, Peru from 1997 to 2000 and as deputy in Embassy Lima’s Economic Section from 1996 to 1997. From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Urs was the Department of State’s senior Pakistan Desk Officer, handling political affairs. During 1993-1994, Mr. Urs served on detail at Department of Treasury, working in the office of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs. Mr. Urs also served as an Economic Officer in Nicaragua (1990-1993), Bangladesh (1998-1990), and Mexico (1987-1988).

Mr. Urs is a 1980 graduate of Georgetown University, where he studied Latin American politics and economics at the School of Foreign Service. He earned a Masters Degree at the University of Texas in economics (1985). He has completed all coursework and preliminary examinations required for a Ph.D. in economics at the University of Wisconsin. He speaks Spanish and Hindi.
