K-12 Students

NREL's Education Programs seek to promote science, mathematics and technology education using renewable energy as the vehicle to capture student interest. Engaging students in science and engineering activities opens the door for both study and career opportunities in these disciplines. Students from traditionally under represented ethnic and gender groups are encouraged to participate from all academic levels.

Elementary

Coalition for Learning Opportunities and United Tutors (CLOUT)

CLOUT volunteers tutor selected fourth grade students from Denver regional schools on a "one-to-one" basis, helping them improve their reading skills and science knowledge. Reading is augmented with science and technology activities.

Middle School

DOE National Middle School Science Bowl

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Middle School Science Bowl is a fun fast-paced academic tournament and hydrogen fuel cell car competition that tests the brainpower of middle school teams on science and math topics. NREL manages the National Middle School Science Bowl for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.

DOE Junior Solar Sprint-Hydrogen Fuel Cell Competitions

The U.S. Department of Energy's Junior Solar Sprint/Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Competitions (JSS/HFC) is a classroom-based, hands-on educational program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. JSS-HFC student teams apply math, science, and creativity to construct model solar-powered and hydrogen powered cars and race them in interscholastic competitions hosted within their schools or within their states or regions.
