A list of current FEDMAP-funded projects with brief descriptions of their purpose and, where available, Web site links are given below.  3D/4D Mapping of the San Andreas Fault Zone           
Purpose: To understand the evolution of the San Andreas Fault since its inception.
Appalachian Blue Ridge Landscape
Purpose: To determine how geology has influenced the topography, water, soils, and plant and animal communities of the Appalachian Blue Ridge Mountains.
Atlantic Estuaries
Purpose: To understand the interactions of geology, land-use practices, and climate and their influence on ecosystems of Chesapeake Bay and its watershed.
Basins and Landscape Co-evolution (BALANCE)
Purpose: To understand the earth-surface processes related to ground water, geologic hazards, and ecosystems in southern California.
Carolina Continental Margin
Purpose: To understand how geology affects ground-water availability in North and South Carolina.
Cenozoic Tectonics of Northwest Utah
Purpose: To understand Cenozoic faulting, volcanism, and depositional histories of the region as a predictor of future geologic events.
Central Colorado Assessment
Purpose: To provide a comprehensive geologic information base in the central Colorado urban corridor for addressing the region's land-use issues.
Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater
Purpose: To understand the present-day hydrogeologic effects of a comet or meteorite impact in the western Atlantic Ocean about 35 million years ago.
Core Geochronology Operations
Purpose: To provide potassium/argon rock and mineral dating for the USGS.

   Debris-Flow Studies in the San Francisco Bay Region

             Purpose: To understand the influence of wind-driven rainfall on the position of  shallow landslides in the San Francisco Bay region.

   FOQUS-LA (Focus on Quaternary Stratigraphy of the Los Angeles Region)

Purpose: To understand the geology of the Los Angeles area and how it influences earthquake hazards and the availability and contamination of ground water.
    Framework Geology of Mid-Continent Carbonate Aquifers
Purpose: To understand geologic controls on ground-water availability in south-        central United States.
    Geologic Framework of Rio Grande Basins
Purpose: To understand how geology influences the availability of ground-water and natural resources and tectonic hazards in Rio Grande basins in New Mexico and Colorado.
    Geologic Mapping and Hydrology of Crystalline Rocks
Purpose:  To understand the distribution and behavior of ground water and ground-water contaminants in parts of the eastern U.S. underlain by crystalline bedrock.
    Geology of Parks and Federal Lands of the Southwest
Purpose: To provide the National Park Service with the geologic understanding they need to make informed land-use decisions.
   Geophysical and Geologic Investigations in the Great Basin
Purpose: To understand geologic controls on ground-water, geothermal, and  buried mineral resources in the Great Basin.
   Glacial Aquifer Systems Stratigraphy (GLASS)
Purpose: To understand how glacial deposits influence the availability of ground-water and aggregate resources.
   Integrated Geological, Geophysical, and Geochemical Studies of Big Bend   National Park
Purpose: To provide information about the geology of Big Bend National Park to help with solving its numerous land-use issues.
   Isotope Geochemistry/Geochronology Research and Development— Multi- User New Capabilities
Purpose: To develop the best isotope geochemistry/geochronology technology for the USGS.
   Isotopic/Geochronology Core Operations, Lab Support
Purpose: To provide isotope/geochronology expertise for the USGS.
   Karst Applied Research Studies through Geologic Mapping
Purpose: To understand how karst can influence ground-water availability and urbanization.
   Missouri River Geologic Framework
Purpose:  To provide hydrologic controls on water availability and to understand the surficial processes that control the geology, hydrology, and ecology of the lower Missouri River.
   National Geologic Map Database
Purpose: To make geologic maps and related databases of North America more accessible to the public.
   Navajo Land-Use Planning Project
Purpose: To provide a geologic framework to the Navajo Nation for land-use planning and natural resource management.
   Pacific Northwest Urban Corridor Geologic Mapping
Purpose: To provide geologic mapping, geophysical surveys, and research needed for earthquake hazard mitigation and groundwater resource assessments in the Seattle-Portland urban corridor.
   Paleohydrologic History of the Mojave Desert Region
Purpose: To obtain and interpret a record of climate change in the  Mojave Deserty during the Pleistocene and early Holocene that can be used to forecast future climate changes in the region.
   Quaternary Evolution of Selected Areas of Sacramento Valley
Purpose: To understand the geologic processes that control the Sacramento Valley so that the river system can be managed sensibly and effectively.

   Regional Surficial Geologic Mapping, Western Plains and Rocky Mountains

          Purpose: To provide surficial geologic maps in the western plains and the Rocky Mountains for multiple land uses.

   Surficial Geologic Mapping in the Southwest
Purpose: To provide geologic databases for understanding the potential long-term effects of urban development and land use in the Mojave Desert near Las Vegas.
   Tephrochronology Laboratory
Purpose: To provide the USGS with reliable geologic ages for volcanic rocks.
   Understanding Geohydrologic Systems from Geologic Framework and History
Purpose: To understand how geology influences ground-water availability, movement, and contamination in the western U.S.
   U.S. - Mexico Border Geologic Mapping
Purpose: To understand the geology along the U.S. - Mexico border in support of land-use management.
Wildfire-related Debris Flow and Landslide Hazards
Purpose: To understand how and why wildfires can cause landslides.
