A Woman's Place is in the Mines

"For every woman who goes into an underground mine, a man comes up dead." Sound ridiculous? Superstitions such as this one were rampant in the early days of mining. Today, thankfully, women are a major presence in the industry. Many have cultivated rewarding careers as mining engineers, drillers, haul truck operators, foremen, and safety directors. Some have chosen to make their mark as federal mine safety and health professionals. Here are the stories of five of these women.
