SNIDER GUARD STATION (WY), BRIDGER-TETON NF - FS, WY

Description

The Snider Basin Guard Station (GS) is located in Synder Basin on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The GS is approximately 22 miles west of Big Piney, WY. The GS is available year-round for reservations.

The GS has running potable water in the summer months only, no running water from approximately September 15 to May 15. There is an outhouse located behind the GS. The kitchen is equipped with a propane cook stove, a variety of cookware and utensils, a table with four chairs, a refrigerator and a sink. You will need to supply your own drinking water, matches, towels or rags, soap and garbage bags. The cabin has propane heat and propane lights.

There are two bunkbeds( four single beds total), two dressers, a cabinet and two extra chairs in the sleeping quarters. No linens or bedding are provided.

Pets and stock are allowed at the GS. Livestock may be kept in the corral northwest of the bunkhouse. If you bring hay it must be certified weed free. No smoking is allowed in the bunkhouse. If you smoke outside please place cigarette butts in the butt cans. There are opportunities for hiking and fishing within close proximity of the GS.

Alerts and Important Information

Snider Guard Station will have water shut off to prevent the pipes from freezing after September 8. Guard station can be rented, please bring your own water.

  • Reservations must be made at least 1 day in advance.
  • Cabin can only be reserved for up to 180 days in advance.
  • You must bring your own drinking water.
  • The key to the GS can be collected from the Big Piney Ranger District Offce, 8-4:30, M-F. Arrangements can be made for after hours pick-ups if you call the district office in advance.
  • There are safety precautions for Hanta Virus that must be followed. Please contact the district office for more information.
  • From September 15th until November 30th there is a stay limit of five consecutive days or of five one day stays for members of an immediate family.
  • DO NOT attempt to use the wood cookstove.
  • No smoking in the GS.
  • During the winter months access to the GS is limited to snowmobiles, snowshoes and crosscountry skiis. The distance from a plowed road to the GS is approximately 10 miles.

From Salt Lake City, take 1-80 east approximately 91 miles to exit #18 toward Kemmerer. Turn left onto US-189, driving north 36.4 miles to Kemmerer. At Kemmerer US-189 becomes Central Ave., go .2 miles and continue on Corral St. Go .2 miles then Corral becomes Pine Ave. Go .5 miles on Pine Ave then turn right on Quartz St. (US-189). Continue on US- 189 68.5 miles to Big Piney. Turn left onto State Highway 350, heading west from Big Piney. After approximately 10 miles the pavement ends and the road forks. Take the left fork and travel about 12.5 miles. Shortly after crossing South Piney Creek, you will reach a "Y" intersection. Take the right fork approximately 0.5 mile to the Guard Station. The bunkhouse will be on your left. Total mileage from Salt Lake City to the Guard Station is 223 miles.
