Funding Opportunities for the Recovery Act: NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research

Recovery.gov logoRecovery Act Limited Competition: NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research (RC1) (RFA-0D-09-003)

NIH has designated at least $200 million of its ARRA funds for a new initiative, in Fiscal Year 2009 and Fiscal Year 2010, called the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research. This new program will support research on topic areas addressing specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research that would benefit from significant two-year jumpstart funds.

NIH anticipates funding 200 or more grants, each of up to $1 million in total costs, pending the number and quality of applications and availability of funds. The NIH has identified a range of Challenge Areas that focus on specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways. The research in these Challenge Areas should have a high impact in biomedical or behavioral science and/or public health.

The application due date is April 27, 2009.

NICHD-specific Challenge Topics

The Institute is interested in applications related to many NICHD-specific Challenge Topics within the broader NIH Challenge Areas that relate to its mission.

The Institute will give priority to those requests that clearly create or preserve jobs, build infrastructure for future research activities, and move science forward.

If you are thinking about applying for a grant on one of the NICHD Challenge Topics, please contact your Program Officer to discuss the topic in more detail. Contact information for the Program Official is available in the NIH Commons and in other official documents related to the grant.

Additional information about the Recovery Act FOAs and related NIH opportunities is available through the Office of Extramural Research at http://grants.nih.gov/recovery.

Important Notes

Applicants (individuals and organizations) must register in both the grants.gov and the electronic Research Administration (eRA) commons systems to apply for most NIH grants; to register on grants.gov, visit http://grants.gov/applicants/get_registered.jsp; to register on eRA commons, visit https://commons.era.nih.gov/commons/registration/registrationInstructions.jsp.

For all applications funded through the Recovery Act, funds are available for two years only (Fiscal Year 2009 and Fiscal Year 2010); after that time, all projects must be completed. Successful applicants will need to meet special reporting and other requirements in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Recovery Act. Please review the ARRA Award terms for more information.
