The National Wetlands Research Center
(NWRC) is actively involved with both National Information Infrastructure
(NII) initiatives of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and the
National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII). The NSDI encompasses
the policies, standards, and procedures for organizations to cooperatively
produce and share geospatial data, with a vision for current and accurate
geospatial data to be readily available via internet. With the signing of
Executive Order 12906, "Coordinating Geographic Data Acquisition and
Access: The National Spatial Data Infrastructure," on April 11, 1994,
President Clinton instructed federal agencies to use the Federal Geographic
Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata
to document their geospatial data sets and to provide access to their metadata
via a National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse. The NWRC is also participating
in a related initiative of the NBII developed by the Biological Resources
Division of USGS. The NSDI and NBII initiatives overlap with regard to spatially
related biological data sets which NWRC develops and maintains.
NWRC is currently in the process of inventorying
its extensive spatial data holdings, preparing metadata for these data sets
in priority order, and compiling spatial data sets on to Internet services
for participation in the NII activities. Development methodologies and implementation
tools for the inventory and server set-up are being shared with other agencies
seeking to participate in the NSDI, NBII, and NII activities. These and other
related resources are available online via NWRC's
Spatial Data and Metadata Server (SDMS).
