High School Students Begin Battle for Trip to the National Science Bowl

Proving that they know more about science than some adults will be a cinch for approximately 160 Colorado high school students who will showcase their science and math knowledge at the Colorado Science Bowl on Saturday, January 31, at Dakota Ridge High School.
The U.S. Department of Energy began the science bowl tradition nearly 20 years ago as a way to encourage high school students to explore math and science. The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Golden Field Office is again one of the major sponsors of this year’s Colorado Science Bowl. “The Science Bowl is the nation's premier science and math competition for high school students, and all those who participate are among our nation's best and brightest, Rita Wells, Golden Field Office manager, said. "We support this competition so they can demonstrate their skills and, in the process, inspire young people across the country to become the scientists and engineers we need to keep our nation competitive in the global economy.”
Reigning Colorado Science Bowl champions, Pueblo Centennial High School, will be back to compete against budding scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Students will answer rapid-fire questions with tournament rounds lasting only 20 minutes. Questions cover physics, math, biology, astronomy, chemistry, computers, earth and general sciences. Each team is made up of four students, one alternate and a coach. The winning team advances to the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. (April 30 – May 5), where more than 450 students from 67 high schools will compete for the national title.
This year’s Colorado Science Bowl teams include:
- Arapahoe High School (Centennial) – two teams
- Cheyenne Mountain High School (Colorado Springs) – two teams
- Coronado High School - (Colorado Springs) – two teams
- D’Evelyn Senior High (Denver) – two teams
- Dakota Ridge High School (Littleton)
- Douglas County High School (Castle Rock) two teams
- Eaglecrest High School (Aurora) – two teams
- Eagle Valley High School (Gypsum) – two teams
- Highlands Ranch High School – two teams
- Jefferson Academy High School (Broomfield) – two teams
- John F. Kennedy High School (Denver)
- Lakewood High School
- Longmont High School – two teams
- Pueblo Centennial High School – two teams
- Smoky Hill High School (Aurora) – two teams
- Standley Lake High School (Westminster)
- The Crucibles Science Club (Denver) – two teams
- Thunder Ridge High School (Highlands Ranch)
- Wheat Ridge High School – two teams
The Colorado Science Bowl runs from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on January 31, at Dakota Ridge High School (13399 W. Coal Mine Ave., Littleton, 80127). Sponsors for the event are the U.S. Department of Energy Golden Field Office; DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL); Xcel Energy Foundation; Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC; Jefferson County Public Schools; Dakota Ridge High School; U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science; and Warren Tech Career and Technical High School.
The National Science Bowl is celebrating 19 years of competition and is the only academic event of its kind that is sponsored by a U.S. government agency. Over the next few months, approximately 21,000 high school students from across the country will compete for a chance to go to Washington D.C. for the national finals.
