Oakland, CA -- The Georgetown Fire Protection District in Georgetown, CA has been selected to receive a grant from the Department of Homeland Security as part of the 2003 Assistance to Firefighter Grant program. The Georgetown Fire Protection District was one of the first 219 grants made through the program of what will ultimately total approximately 7,000 grants worth $750 million in direct assistance to firefighters.

The $175,500 grant will be used to fund the purchase of a new multi-hazard fire apparatus needed by the department. Grants may be used for one of four purposes, which include helping local fire departments purchase firefighting equipment, fund firefighter health and safety programs, enhance emergency medical services programs, or conduct fire prevention and safety programs.

"The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is a great example of how Homeland Security is putting key resources directly into neighborhoods and communities to better secure the homeland," said Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in a statement released as part of the national announcement.

Karen Armes, deputy regional director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Region IX, joined Georgetown Fire Protection District Chief Rick Todd at the Georgetown Fire Station 61 during an event on Thursday to announce the grant.

"The grants put federal resources into the hands of the first responders so that they can plan for and operate during emergency situations according to their local needs. These grants play an important role in making sure our communities are protected," said Armes.

The grant to the Georgetown Fire Protection District provides for the purchase of a new Type III fire suppression engine. The 4-wheel drive apparatus will be used for both structural and wild land firefighting arenas.

"The district hasn't been able to purchase a new engine in 20 years. This grant will be a real morale booster for our firefighters and a great source of pride for our community. It will enhance our ability to work effectively and safely on the fireline," said Chief Todd.
