Dededo, Guam -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials have been receiving calls inquiring about the disposition of used tents given to displaced island residents. Reports are that FEMA is requesting the tents be returned once families are done with them. This is incorrect.

FEMA has no intention of asking for the return of the tents They will, however, be collecting generators and other supplies to be put in storage for future use. The tents will not be part of the collection process.

Disaster officials note that the tents have been provided to families for their use during the recovery period.

Governor Carl T.C. Gutierrez thanked federal officials for their willingness to make the final disposition of the tents a locally decided issue. "This is another example of the wonderful cooperation we have received from the federal government in this disaster," Gutierrez stated. "We approached FEMA about the tent return issue and they basically told us the tents are for the people of Guam to use for as long as they need them."

The Governor noted, "It would be nice if people returned the tents to Civil Defense or their village mayor for community use when they are no longer needed. However," he said, "it would not be required."
