Dededo, Guam -- Workers on Guam who are unemployed because of Super Typhoon Pongsona, which struck the island on December 8, have until January 21 to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). The DUA program covers agricultural and hourly-paid workers, salaried employees, the self-employed and other categories of workers.

Eligible residents may apply until January 21, 2003 for disaster unemployment at the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) between the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The DRCs are the only places applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance will be taken.

To date 3,563 applicants have been approved to receive DUA. More than $82,000 in claims have been paid.

Federal Coordinating Officer David Fukutomi urged everyone who is unemployed due to Super Typhoon Pongsona to go to a DRC and apply. "The deadline is near, just one more week," he stated.

Applicants should bring a picture ID, social security number, information on employment such as pay stubs or other verification of employment, and a letter from the employer verifying lost time due to the typhoon. Farmers and other self-employed individuals should bring receipts that show the primary source of income and tax receipts as well. Individuals unable to work due to an injury suffered from the typhoon should bring a doctor's statement.

The DUA program is funded entirely by the federal government.
