Abstract : | Environmental and endocrine factors that regulate sensory and behavioral changes during the parr-smolt transformation of Atlantic salmon are virtually unknown. Naturally migrating wild and hatchery fish will be examined to monitor environmental and endocrine changes which influence sensory biology and migratory behavior. In the laboratory, environmental conditions will be manipulated to determine how sensory biology, migratory behavior, and hormone levels are affected. The olfactory morphology of some naturally migrating and hatchery-reared smolts will be examined to determine changes in morphology occurring during the downstream migration. Hatchery releases will be conducted to provide information on the efficiency of the smoltification process of hatchery-reared versus wild fish. This will have implications for release of salmon as fry, parr or smolt and vastly improve currently used hatchery rearing and release practices. |
