Abstract : | Fish have been cultured in the United States since the 1870s. Little is known of the sources or performance characteristics of the original broodstocks beyond the body of water from which they came. New broodstocks were formed by interhatchery transfers, introductions from natural populations, crosses between broodstocks, and selection programs to enhance specific traits. Most stocks now used in fishery management have been developed in the last 25 years. Today we manage declining fishery resources to meet increasingly diverse demands for recreational fishing and for preservation of native strains, and this is done in the face of declining habitat and increasing competition for limited resources. It is essential that managers have information needed to manage the remaining fishery resources effectively. Fishery managers have long sought the ability to match genetic and performance characteristics of a strain with the functional goals and habitat of the specific fishery. |
