Abstract : | The striped bass (Morone saxatilis) tagging database has resulted from a unique cooperative effort among state and federal agencies and private recreational and commercial anglers. The tagging database provides a valuable long-term record for the study of mortality and migration processes of one of the most important coastal species. Tagging has been ongoing since 1987 with over 175,000 fish tagged and 45,000 tags recovered to date. Once a striped bass is released it can be captured throughout the year in recreational and commercial fisheries, or in fishery-independent surveys. Many of the striped bass which are caught are not harvested, but released alive. To date only the first reported recapture or recovery, along with the release, has been used to estimate survival by applying tag-recovery models (Brownie et al. 1985, USFWS Res. Publ. 156; Dorazio 1993 Can. J. F. & Aq. Sci. 50). |
