Abstract : Flavobacterium psychrophilum is the causative agent of bacterial coldwater disease (CWD), which is sometimes referred to as low temperature disease. The disease causes significant mortality among salmonid fishes particularly to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the cultured salmon species, especially coho salmon (O. kisutch). Generally, CWD occurs at temperatures below 13°C and is most prevalent below 10°C, when there may be reduced physiological resistance of fish to diseases. Thus, there will be innate geographic limitations to the hosts affected. Early signs to fish include areas of rough skin and loss of fin tip integrity; darkening of the skin in the peduncle area is a frequently noted clinical sign. These conditions coincide with bacterial colonization that may lead to erosion of fins with a particular affect on the caudal fin, sometimes termed fin rot or tail rot.
